Martin Lewis MSE names the best Easter egg - and it's not Lindt or Thorntons

The Money Saving Expert website has officially named the best chocolate Easter egg for 2023 - and the winner beat out big name brands such as Lindt and Thorntons.

With Easter round the corner, many of us will be heading to the supermarket to get our hands on some chocolate eggs to gift to others, or, let's face it, to tuck into ourselves.

But, before you go splashing out on one of the more lavish Easter eggs you think might taste better than a more simple (and cheaper) option), results of a recent taste test may make you think twice.

The team over at the Martin Lewis owned Money Saving Expert website brought back their Easter Egg Taste Test for 2023 and found that Cadbury's, the cheapest option, was the best of the bunch.

One hundred MSE team members took part in the seasonal taste test where they tried out seven milk chocolate eggs, including a vegan option, from the likes of Aldi, Sainsbury's, Cadbury, NOMO, Thortons and Lindt.

Each chocolate egg was taken out of their packaging, broken into pieces and numbered to ensure total anonymity. Each tester was asked which egg was their favourite and the one they thought was the most expensive.

Cadbury's Dairy Milk Buttons, priced at just £1.25, came out on top with 24 votes, as members of the MSE team commended it as a "classic UK egg" that was milky and creamy, and not too sweet.

While the winner of this year's taste test is certainly great for our bank balances, it is worth noting that the two most expensive options did manage to come in joint second place with 22 votes each.

First up is the classic £12 Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate Egg, with the MSE team liking its "beautifully rich" and "creamy flavour", though some did mention that it "tasted cheap."

The luxurious £10 Thorntons Continental also took second place with positive comments focusing on its "smooth and classy flavour" and "hints of spice." However, negative comments mention that it was "underwhelming" and "a bit crumbly."
