Martin Lewis issues warnings to self-employed claiming fourth SEISS grant and every driver in the UK

Martin Lewis was back on TV screens on Tuesday night presenting an hour-long holiday special with co-host Angelica Bell covering everything from holidays at home and abroad, travel insurance, bank refunds, energy bills, working from home benefits and claiming marriage tax allowance.

During the bumper edition of The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, the financial guru also issued warnings to every motorist in the UK and self-employed workers applying for the fourth Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) grant.

Martin urged every driver to check their driving licence now, or face a £1,000 fine.

He told viewers: “Get your driving licences out, photo driving licences only last for 10 years. Now, during the pandemic if it expired between February and December 2020,  they [DVLA] gave you an 11-month automatic extension. But that has now stopped.”

Martin continued: “It’s the 4B bit on your driving licence you should be checking. If it’s expired just go and renew it, you won’t be fined for renewing it if it’s out of date, but if you don’t sort it out and they keep telling you to, the highest fine you could get is £1,000.”

Martin also issued a warning to every self-employed worker claiming the fourth SEISS grant.

The consumer champion said: “The fourth self-employment grant last application date is June 1st, I’ve spoken about this a lot before, it’s orth up to £7,500, three months average profit from February to April.

“You must declare a reasonable belief of significant Covid profit reduction. Remember, for this grant, because they [HMRC] are accepting the most recent tax returns, many people who weren’t eligible for the earlier grants have been eligible for this.

Martin explained how he received a message from someone who hadn’t bothered to apply but after his prompting had discovered they were eligible for the financial support and it was a “lifeline I’ve been so desperate for”.

Martin warned viewers: “If you haven’t checked, do it soon because that deadline is coming.”

Applications for SEISS 4 will close at 11.59pm on June1, 2021 - find out more about making a claim on GOV.UK here.
