The savings expert dished out the advice on his ITV show, The Martin Lewis Money Show.

Martin explained to viewers that the payment holidays could offer some vital breaks for those struggling, but also come with some risk.

Currently, you are entitled to three month payment holidays on mortgages, cards and loans.

New rules coming into force next week means that car finance, rent-to-own, pawnbroking and buy-now, pay later debts will also offer a payment holiday.

Speaking from his home studio, Martin said: "You always want to avoid a payment holiday if you can because interest continues to build up."

"The least worst is a mortgage payment holiday," he added.

"All the others - credit cards, car finance, you really want to avoid those if you can."

The main concern for those requesting payment holidays was that while the payments stop, the interest continues to build up.

Mortgages are the least risky due to the payments being spread over a long time, but Martin has urged people who don't have long left on their mortgage to avoid taking a payment holiday.

The savings expert also said a number of people had complained to him about their mortgages 'doubling' with the holiday.

He said: "It looks to me like we're starting to see some calculation mistakes from banks and building societies [on mortgages]."

"There's no way your mortgage should be doubling from a three month holiday, unless you've got six months left on the mortgage in which case I premuse you wouldn't ask," he added.

"You need to go back and ask them what it's all about.

"You'd expect to see it go up £10, £20, £30 even £50, but not doubling your mortgage. The maths just isn't right."

The Martin Lewis Money Show continues Thursdays on ITV at 8:02pm.
