Martin Lewis explains what to do if you owe council tax as government announces changes to debt collection

Martin Lewis has explained the best course of action if you are in council tax debt.

The MoneySavingExpert founder has previously condemned council tax debt collection as "aggressive" and "the most vicious and damaging form of legal debt", as he appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain on Wednesday (15 April) to praise the government’s response to the consultation into the English council tax system.

The government recommended that, from April 2027, councils must wait 63 days before they can demand a full year's missed payment. Under current rules, councils can demand the full year’s payment three weeks after the first missed payment.

When asked what to do if you owe council tax, he said, "First,  talk to the National Debtline, the Citizens Advice Bureau, StepChange [Debt Charity], and the council about trying to repay", as opposed to panicking and accumulating "expensive credit card debt".
