Mohamed Salah returned as Liverpool made light work of what was expected to be a difficult trip to Marseille in the Champions League. It had been nearly two months since Salah last started a game under Arne Slot, with his high-profile benching and subsequent outburst that threw his Anfield future into serious doubt followed swiftly by a departure for the Africa Cup of Nations. He helped Egypt to finish fourth at AFCON and was immediately recalled to the Reds’ XI on Wednesday night.
Liverpool headed to the hostile and atmospheric Stade Velodrome unbeaten in 12 games across all competitions, but with plenty of frustrations still lingering after a run of four draws in five including being held at home by struggling Burnley at the weekend. They needed a point from their last two league phase fixtures to ensure a spot in the knockout play-offs but will now have strong hopes of sealing a top-eight finish and direct progress into the last 16 with one game to play - at home to Qarabag next week.
Slot’s men are up to fourth after goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and substitute Cody Gakpo either side of a Geronimo Rulli own goal forced by Jeremie Frimpong made it a very comfortable evening indeed in the south of France. Follow Marseille vs Liverpool live below!
Marseille vs Liverpool highlights
- GOAL! Substitute Gakpo nets in stoppage time
- GOAL! Frimpong forces Rulli own goal
- Ekitike smashes against the post for Liverpool
- GOAL! Szoboszlai free-kick on stroke of half-time
- NO GOAL! Ekitike tap-in ruled out for offside

Lovely win tonight great to see the boys all pulling together in the same direction. The third goal was a thing of beauty #lfc lets hope we take this into the league. Gomez & VVD looked solid.

22:52 , George FloodIt’s been a mostly tough season in many respects for Liverpool so far, but could they be coming to the boil just in time to make a deep run in the Champions League?
13 games unbeaten across all competitions is the longest active streak in Europe’s top five leagues...
Today was the perfect example that we now finally have a good foundation to build off, we obviously need performances to continue which I believe they will, but we genuinely could be peaking at the right time to be successful in the champions league.#LFC

Marseille 0-3 Liverpool
21:57 , George FloodFull-time
A brilliant evening in the Champions League for Liverpool, who deliver a very professional performance to score three goals and silence the hostile Stade Velodrome.
13 games unbeaten now across all competitions and a much-needed clinical attacking display after their recent run of frustrating draws.
And it could have been even more emphatic, with Ekitike hitting the post and seeing an effort disallowed.
They are up to fourth in the league phase table on 15 points with only Qarabag to come at Anfield next week.
The Reds are already guaranteed a place in the knockout play-offs but look firmly on track for a top-eight finish and automatic progress into the last 16.
A sobering night for De Zerbi and Marseille, who drop to 19th and four points adrift of the top eight ahead of a trip to Club Brugge.
They will have to make do with the play-offs.

GOAL! Marseille 0-3 Liverpool | Cody Gakpo 93'
21:54 , George Flood93 mins: The icing on the cake!
Gakpo curls nicely into the bottom corner from Gravenberch’s pass after a fine touch by Szoboszlai in the build-up.
What a night for Liverpool.
Marseille 0-2 Liverpool
21:53 , George Flood91 mins: Into three minutes of added time at the Stade Velodrome.
Aubameyang suddenly comes alive as he forces a strong save from Alisson after being teed up by Greenwood.
Weah then fires well over from distance.
Marseille 0-2 Liverpool
21:52 , George Flood88 mins: Marseille are having all the possession late on, but can do precisely nothing with it as an aimless Greenwood cross sails wide.
Aubameyang has had no impact at all.
Marseille 0-2 Liverpool
21:48 , George Flood85 mins: Now Paixao cuts inside onto his right foot and curls well over the bar.
A rough cameo off the bench for the former Feyenoord frontman.
Marseille 0-2 Liverpool
21:46 , George Flood83 mins: Salah tries to make it 3-0 to Liverpool by finishing with the outside of his left boot, but he gets it all wrong and scuffs well wide.
At the other end, Hojbjerg tees up substitute Paixao for a header that is miles off target.
Another loud bang inside the Stade Velodrome.
Marseille 0-2 Liverpool
21:44 , George Flood81 mins: Liverpool are being forced onto the defensive inside the final 10 minutes, but they are very comfortable as Van Dijk tidies up with aplomb.
There was a massive bang in the stadium a few moments ago. Not sure what that was.
Marseille 0-2 Liverpool
21:43 , George Flood79 mins: Two changes from Slot after the second Liverpool goal.
Jones and Gakpo replace Wirtz and Ekitike, who can count himself very unlucky not to have scored on his return to France.
Marseille 0-2 Liverpool
21:42 , George Flood76 mins: Marseille are trying to rally after that second goal but a couple of quick-fire corners come to nothing as Alisson gratefully gathers.
GOAL! Marseille 0-2 Liverpool | Geronimo Rulli OG 72'
21:34 , George Flood72 mins: Liverpool double their lead with less than 20 minutes to play!
Frimpong cuts in off the right and beats Paixao all ends up before playing a low pass that is inadvertently deflected in off Rulli by Medina.
That will go down as an unfortunate own goal by the goalkeeper.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:32 , George Flood69 mins: Gomez does well to prevent a Marseille corner after some sloppiness by centre-back partner Van Dijk.
The door is firmly closed on Frimpong by Murillo but Liverpool quickly come again, with Ekitike setting up Salah for a header that drifts beyond the back post.
The offside flag is up.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:30 , George Flood68 mins: De Zerbi makes a triple change with just over 20 minutes to go as Marseille search for an equaliser.
Aubameyang, Paixao and Nadir replace Gouiri, Kondogbia and Traore.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:29 , George Flood65 mins: Ekitike smashes over with a fierce strike that looked to brush the fingertips of Rulli. Goal kick given.
Van Dijk then makes an important block to guide Weah’s low effort into the side netting.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:25 , George Flood62 mins: The chances are arriving thick and fast now as we tick past the hour mark at the Stade Velodrome.
Ekitike is a real problem for Marseille as Wirtz is now denied by an excellent save by Rulli at his near post.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:20 , George Flood58 mins: Woodwork!
Marseille have been better in this second half but they get lucky again as Ekitike thunders against the post.
Now the hosts counter with pace and Traore lifts the ball over the bar.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:19 , George Flood55 mins: Gravenberch with some persistent and committed defending inside the Liverpool box to thwart Gouiri, while a pass intended for Traore is then overhit.
Balerdi gets an arm across to stop Salah in his tracks at the other end, where a Reds corner is easily cleared.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:16 , George Flood53 mins: Alisson makes a simple catch after a strike from Weah is deflected high into the air.
The Brazilian immediately tries to release Salah, who can’t get a shot away with Rulli initially off his line.
The home fans are reacting to some sustained pressure from Marseille at long last.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:14 , George Flood51 mins: Greenwood with a little stepover as he beats Wirtz and a dipping strike bounces awkwardly before being pushed wide by Alisson, who got down well with two hands low to his left.
Liverpool can’t clear their lines from the resulting corner and another effort from Greenwood is blocked behind by Kerkez.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:12 , George Flood49 mins: Lovely play from Ekitike to cut inside off the left past Pavard and tee up Wirtz, whose first touch is heavy and his effort is blocked by Balerdi.
Solid defending from Frimpong at the other end to snuff out the brief danger posed by lethargic Marseille.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:10 , George Flood48 mins: Hojbjerg is off target with an early second-half attempt.
Pavard then needlessly shoves Kerkez in the back and picks up a silly booking that will see him miss Marseille’s final league phase match against Club Brugge next week.
So foolish.
Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
21:07 , George FloodBack underway in the south of France.
No changes from either manager at the break, though De Zerbi will surely be switching things up sooner rather than later if his side don’t improve here.
More of the same will have been the request from Slot...

Marseille 0-1 Liverpool
20:52 , George FloodHalf-time
Szoboszlai's smart free-kick has the Reds deservedly ahead at the break.
Ekitike also had a goal ruled out during an impressive first half from the Reds, while Alisson did well to deny Gouiri.
Slot will be very pleased with what he’s seen so far tonight.
GOAL! Marseille 0-1 Liverpool | Dominik Szoboszlai 46'
20:49 , George Flood46 mins: Liverpool break the deadlock on the stroke of half-time!
The wall jumps after that foolish foul by Balerdi on Gravenberch, so Szoboszlai just delivers a simple side-foot under them that ends up in the back of the net.
No less than Liverpool deserve for an impressive first half.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:47 , George Flood45 mins: Checked and cleared.
Slot is registering his protests with the fourth official.
Just the one minute of added time signalled.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:46 , George Flood43 mins: Balerdi wipes out Gravenberch with a very silly challenge just outside the Marseille box.
Liverpool had been appealing for a penalty for handball against Weah.
VAR are looking...
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:43 , George Flood39 mins: Chance for Liverpool as Salah guides the ball off his thigh onto the roof of the net, beating Balerdi to Frimpong’s cross from wide on the right.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:42 , George Flood37 mins: Liverpool have certainly been the better side in this first half and Pavard crucially nicks the ball off Wirtz’s toes in the box.
Marseille can’t move the ball forward with any sort of purpose at the moment.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:37 , George Flood34 mins: A super lofted ball from Salah goes over the head of Pavard and Rulli - once of Manchester City - comes out to meet Ekitike, who was offside once more.

Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:36 , George Flood33 mins: Marseille have a corner after Van Dijk repels a cross from Weah.
Greenwood goes short and the eventual cross drifts out of play beyond the far post for a goal kick.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:35 , George Flood32 mins: Slot is deep in conversation with assistant Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the Liverpool dugout as Frimpong takes a heavy fall after challenging for a header.
A cross from Szoboszlai is well overhit and sails out of play.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:32 , George Flood26 mins: Marseille charge forward after that reprieve and Alisson does well to parry a fierce drive from Gouiri.
At the other end, Liverpool get more joy down the right flank but they can’t make the most of Frimpong’s delivery.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:27 , George Flood23 mins: A great move from Liverpool ends with Szoboszlai laying the ball on a plate for Ekitike to tap home.
He wheels away to celebrate, but replays show he was offside.
The goal is quickly chalked off.
As you were.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:23 , George Flood18 mins: Liverpool are on top now as Rulli can’t deal with a ball to the back post and it bounces behind off Murillo’s shoulder.
More wrestling and referee warnings at the corner, which is cleared.
Salah takes a great touch from Ekitike’s fired cross before Murillo intervenes.
Now Mac Allister does brilliantly to get away from Hojbjerg before drilling a low shot just wide of the far post.
That was close.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:20 , George FloodHow about this tifo game, by the way?
The Beatles reading Marseille newspaper La Provence...

Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:16 , George Flood10 mins: This attacking system for Marseille under De Zerbi is something to behold as Pavard - one of their three centre-backs - is again the furthest forward as he almost connects with a low cross from the left.
Kerkez and Alisson do just enough in the end as Pavard pounds the turf in frustration.
At the other end, a long ball forward from Liverpool is too strong for Salah.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:12 , George Flood8 mins: Greenwood showing a lot of confidence early on with some nice touches and causing problems for Liverpool.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:11 , George Flood6 mins: Alisson has to be alert to race out of the Liverpool box and clear ahead of Murillo after a clever through ball from Greenwood, who has scored 20 goals already this season.
TNT Sports now report that although he’s listed as a substitute, Chiesa is not involved for Liverpool tonight due to a knock sustained in the warm-up.

Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:08 , George Flood5 mins: Liverpool force an early corner after Kerkez’s dangerous cross from the left.
The jeers and whistles rain down from the crowd as the likes of Van Dijk and Ekitike jostle for position in the box, where there is so much going on as the referee dishes out some warnings.
Salah’s delayed delivery is headed well wide by Gomez, but the whistle has gone anyway for a Marseille free-kick.
Marseille 0-0 Liverpool
20:06 , George Flood3 mins: A painful early clash between Kerkez and Pavard, with the latter seemingly coming off worse.
Three at the back for Marseille tonight.

De Zerbi urges Marseille to play with 'courage'
19:49 , George FloodRoberto De Zerbi has urged his Marseille side - currently third in Ligue 1, behind surprise leaders Lens and Paris Saint-Germain - to play with “courage” against Liverpool tonight.
"I have never prepared for a match with the aim of getting a draw. We play to win. If we don't all run together, we won't win," the Italian said yesterday.
"We have to play with courage. We have what it takes to look them in the eye, like we did against (PSG). We can lose, but we can also win.
"We know where we could do better. We want to win trophies. Olympique Marseille tries to be competitive while respecting the opponent.
"I work with my players by explaining one simple thing to them: if we want to get through this stage, get into the Champions League and win trophies, we mustn't think about the match.
"We can't think about playing differently against Nantes and Liverpool.
"We have what it takes to cause them problems. We need to find the right balance between self-esteem and humility."

Slot speaks ahead of Marseille test
19:42 , George FloodSlot strikes the same tone on Salah as he did yesterday during his pre-match interview with TNT Sports pitchside at an already bouncing Stade Velodrome.
He describes the family issues keeping Konate away from tonight’s game as “very sad” but expresses confidence in Gomez.
He also doesn’t seem worried by the hostile atmosphere that awaits his side tonight, pointing to the reception they faced at Galatasaray back in September.
It’s worth noting that Liverpool lost that game 1-0 in Istanbul.

Two Marseille changes as Pavard and Kondogbia return
19:17 , George FloodRoberto De Zerbi’s Marseille, meanwhile, make two changes from the side that thrashed Angers 5-2 in Ligue 1 at the weekend.
Benjamin Pavard returns in defence following a head knock, while Geoffrey Kondogbia gets the nod in midfield.
Bilal Nadir is fit enough for the bench after picking up an injury on Saturday, while Emerson Palmieri drops out completely after picking up a thigh issue in training yesterday.
Starts as usual for ex-Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, plus Bournemouth loanee Hamed Traore.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Angel Gomes, CJ Egan-Riley and Matt O’Riley are all on the bench.

Salah starts for Liverpool as Mac Allister and Gomez come in
19:02 , George FloodSo as expected, Mohamed Salah starts for Liverpool tonight for the first time since the 4-1 Champions League humiliation at the hands of PSV Eindhoven at Anfield on November 26.
He replaces Cody Gakpo in attack, while Alexis Mac Allister returns to midfield at the expense of Curtis Jones.
The absent Ibrahima Konate is replaced at centre-back by Joe Gomez.

Marseille on verge of Ethan Nwaneri loan coup
18:36 , George FloodThe deal isn’t official just yet, but Marseille are about to pull off a significant January coup with the signing of Ethan Nwaneri.
Arsenal were initially reluctant to allow their popular academy graduate to head out on loan this month, but have since performed a U-turn and decided it would be the best thing for his development amid a lack of first-team chances under Mikel Arteta this season.
“William Saliba told me OM is one of the best clubs in the world,” Nwaneri said earlier today after undergoing a medical and being pictured with a Marseille scarf.
“Roberto De Zerbi is also one of the best coaches in the world.”
It is a straight loan deal until the end of the season, with no buy clause included.

Slot hits back at 'weirdest' question over Xabi Alonso
18:24 , George FloodThere was a bizarre moment at Arne Slot’s pre-Marseille press conference last night when he was asked if he felt that the pressure on him at Anfield had ramped up after Real Madrid recently parted ways with Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso.
He was even asked if he had spoken to Alonso since the latter’s Los Blancos reign ended last week after only 28 games, shortly following the Spanish Super Cup final defeat by arch-rivals Barcelona in Jeddah.
"Yes he called me and said 'What do you think about the team because I am going to take over in six months, can you tell me a little bit more?' Or maybe earlier, maybe he takes over tomorrow," Slot joked.
"That is the weirdest question I ever got."

Slot hints at Liverpool start for returning Salah
18:10 , George FloodHere’s what Arne Slot had to say about his relationship with the returning Mohamed Salah at last night’s pre-match press conference...
"As normal as it's always been, with one exception and that was Inter,” he said.
"Let's see for the lineup tomorrow if you still think there's an issue. I spoke to him today and I'm happy to have him back.
"There's been a moment in the season where I decided not to play Mo and one moment where I decided not to take him to the game.
"For all the other games he's been in the squad and was the first substitution against Brighton so at that moment of time, there's never been an issue for me.
"He went to AFCON and did what he usually does and scored goals.
"In his absence I think we have done quite OK in terms of hardly conceding any chances and starting to create more and more...then it is really helpful to have Mohamed Salah.
"There has only been one (player still alive) who scored more for this club but I don't think I can play Ian Rush still."

Calm before the storm
18:04 , George FloodIt’s a serene atmosphere inside the Stade Velodrome at the moment, but the Marseille fans are already producing quite the atmosphere outside the ground with two hours to go until kick-off.
It’s a very difficult ground to go to when the noise levels are surging.

Marseille vs Liverpool prediction
17:57 , George FloodAs Liverpool make the trip to southern France, they will not take much heart from their recent results.
Though unbeaten in 12 they have drawn four of their last five, with three of those stalemates coming against supposedly inferior teams in Burnley, Fulham and Leeds.
Marseille should pose far stiffer opposition tonight.
They have been scoring for fun of late and while nine of those came against a sixth-tier side in the cup, Roberto De Zerbi’s men will still be feeling confident ahead of hosting the Premier League champions.
Should they be sufficiently unsettled by the hostile Stade Velodrome crowd, Liverpool may well come away empty-handed.
Marseille to win, 2-1.

Liverpool team news
17:47 , George FloodMohamed Salah is now back with Liverpool after helping Egypt to a fourth-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Arne Slot hinted at a first Reds start since late November for his star forward in France, looking, with the transfer window still open for another couple of weeks, to firmly put to bed any lingering talk of a rift after his high-profile benching and extraordinary outburst that preceded that exit to AFCON.
However, Ibrahima Konate looks set to miss tonight’s game after not travelling with the team yesterday due to family reasons.
That should mean a start for Joe Gomez at centre-back alongside captain Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool remain without long-term absentees Alexander Isak, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.

Marseille team news
17:41 , George FloodMarseille have been hit by a late injury blow after former Chelsea and West Ham left-back Emerson Palmieri picked up a thigh issue in training on the eve of Liverpool’s visit.
Ex-Hammers centre-back Nayef Aguerd is now back from the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, while Benjamin Pavard and Bilal Nadir should shake off knocks to be available.
Rangers loanee Derek Cornelius is sidelined, along with goalkeeper Ruben Blanco.
Marseille’s squad under Roberto De Zerbi features plenty more ex-Premier League players, including Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Matt O’Riley, Hamed Traore, CJ Egan-Riley, Neal Maupay and Geronimo Rulli.

Marseille vs Liverpool live
17:28 , George FloodGood evening and welcome to Standard Sport’s latest live coverage of the 2025/26 Champions League.
The league phase of Europe’s elite club competition is now reaching its conclusion, with only two more rounds of fixtures left to go as Chelsea host Cypriot side Pafos tonight and Newcastle take on PSV Eindhoven.
But here our focus is solely on events at the Stade Velodrome, where Liverpool face a potentially tough test against free-scoring Marseille.
Arne Slot has hinted at a start for the returning Mohamed Salah as his side, unbeaten in their last 12 games across all competitions, look to step things up after drawing four of the last five - including at home to struggling Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
11th-place Liverpool will still very much be targeting a top-eight finish and automatic progress into the last 16, with only a point needed against Marseille and Qarabag this month to at least guarantee a knockout play-off spot.
Inconsistent Marseille sit 16th and four points adrift of the top eight, but will fancy their chances this evening after scoring 22 goals in just their last five matches, including being 4-0 up inside 40 minutes in their 5-2 thrashing of Ligue 1 opponents Angers at the weekend.
Former Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi continues to be linked with Manchester United, while Ethan Nwaneri is on the verge of joining OM on loan from Arsenal.
Kick-off in the south of France is at 8pm GMT, so stay tuned for match build-up, breaking team news and minute-by-minute game updates.
