Marleau, Leafs win rematch with Sharks in shootout

TORONTO _ Patrick Marleu evened the score with his old friends, winning the rematch against his former-team on home ice in a shootout.

Tyler Bozak clinched a 3-2 shootout win for Marleau's new team, the Toronto Maple Leafs (24-16-2), scoring in the sixth round of the shootout as the Sharks fell to 1-1-1 on their five-game road trip.

The Sharks won their first-ever meeting against Marleau by a 3-2 score in San Jose on Oct. 30.

Marleau nearly scored his first goal against the Sharks when got a look into a gaping net from the doorstep at 7:36 of the second. But defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic picked up goalie Martin Jones, making the save from the crease.

Jones, who made 26 saves on 28 shots, also stopped Marleau with a pad save from the doorstep late in the third.

The Maple Leafs opened the scoring with 1:23 left in the first the when Auston Matthews recorded his 18th of the season, redirecting a Connor Carrick point shot through Jones' five hole.

Brenden Dillon tied the game less than 32 seconds later, pouncing on a loose puck after Matt Martin blocked a Brent Burns shot and firing it into the top-right corner as he was streaking down the left wing.

The goal was Dillon's first since he scored against the Maple Leafs last season on Feb. 28, 2017.

The Leafs jumped ahead 2-1 at 12:40 of the second when Kadri redirected a Mitch Marner shot through Jones' five hole with his skate from the slot.

Once again, the Sharks tied the game late in the period as Chris Tierney scored his ninth of the season, which ranks third in the team's goals race, with 1:42 left in the frame.

Tierney beat Frederik Andersen on his blocker side after the Leafs netminder fumbled a clearing attempt in front of his own net, giving the Sharks center an open look from the doorstep.

Joe Thornton and Kadri set the tone for the feisty affair, fighting just two seconds into the game. Thornton ands Kadri exchanged words in the faceoff circle prior to the opening draw, prompting the Sharks alternate captain to drop the gloves and challenge the Maple Leafs shutdown center to a fight.

Kadri managed to rip a large chunk of hair out of Thornton's beard as they were tangled up during the fight.
