On the markets at midmorning (ET):
The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was up 26.50 points to 15,693.63, after 90 minutes of trading.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 68.28 points to 20,724.38. The S&P 500 index added 6.83 points to 2,362.37, and the Nasdaq composite index was up 15.43 points to 5,893.24.
The Canadian dollar was trading at 74.85 cents US, up a 0.28 of a cent from Friday's close.
The May crude contract was up 63 cents at US$52.87 per barrel and May natural gas contracts were unchanged at US$3.26 per mmBTU.
The June gold contract was down $4.20 at US$1,253.10 an ounce and May copper contracts were down four cents at US$2.61 a pound.
