Mark Wright prays injury won't harm London Marathon chances after past heartbreak

Mark Wright is "praying" an old injury doesn't flare up ahead of running the London Marathon this Sunday, and has lifted the lid on his glitzy celebrations after the crossing the finish line.

The TV star, 35, was left devastated when a tear in his calf muscle forced him to pull out of the marathon last year after weeks of training.

Speaking to the Mirror ahead of his first marathon, he said: "Annoyingly I've got a niggle in my calf this week again, which is why I pulled out last time. I'm just praying it's going to be fine.

The presenter added: "It should be fine, it's causing a bit of pain but isn't terrible."

After intense training, including in Argentina while working and Australia where he visited wife Michelle Keegan while she was on a job, Mark is taking it easy in the days before the 26 mile race.

The former Towie star explained: "I needed to get to twenty miles and I got a bit ill with a cold and stuff so I had two weeks offs so I left my 20 mile run until literally Saturday just gone, which wasn't a good idea because it was the week before. I had to do it mentally to know I could do it.

"This week I am just resting, feet up, a couple of ice massages, a few ice baths and stuff."

Mark says he has pushed himself "to my absolute limit" and there have been moments of pain during the training.

He said: "I climbed up to 15 miles a bit fast, a bit quicker than I should have and the way I felt, I had never felt that feeling before in my legs, my body and my brain. I was like 'wow I've bitten off more than I can chew here'. But as I have gone on and done more I've got better."

Mark, who is teaming up with FLORA's Get Towns Active campaign, which aims to encourage everyone to be more active, has been mentored in his training by three time London Marathon winner Paula Radcliffe.

A fitness fanatic himself, Mark is keen to get others out exercising, even if it's only for a short amount of time.

"I'm running a marathon so I'm saying I'm pushing myself to my absolute limit, all you need to do is something more than you did yesterday,

"Even if it's a run, a walk around the block, a dog walk, whatever, just stay active," he said.

Both Mark and Paula took in Flora's Get Towns Active Runalong at a Brighton Sports Centre today, where participants can train with Mark.

Chatting about what it's like to be mentored by the running legend, Mark said: "It's been amazing having Paula there for advice and just asking what pace to run at and am I doing it right, what to eat, what not to eat."

Turning to the day itself, there will be a group of about 30 supporting Mark, including Coronation Street actress Michelle, and his famous family.

Afterwards, he's booked an area at their favourite hotel- the luxurious Corinthia, in London, to celebrate.

He joked: "I'm looking forward to eating whatever I want that night."

Summarising how he feels ahead of the marathon, Mark said: "I'm feeling good, a bit nervous, a bit apprehensive but extremely excited."
