Veteran actress Mariska Hargitay will host the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing on NBC on September 14.
NBCUniversal announced her selection on Tuesday, a day before nominations are revealed. The ceremony will stream on Peacock and take place at the Peacock Theater, the longtime Emmys home also slated to host the Oscars.
Hargitay, 62, has been a signature NBC personality since 1999, starring as Detective Olivia Benson in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, one of TV's longest-running dramas.
Her role has garnered eight Emmy nominations, including a 2006 win for lead actress. SVU is set to surpass 600 episodes in its 28th season this fall, and Hargitay has used her platform to advocate for sexual assault victims.
She may earn another nomination this year as director and producer of My Mom Jayne, a documentary on her mother, Jayne Mansfield. Hargitay was also a constant presence earlier this year, front row for her beloved New York Knicks' championship run at Madison Square Garden.
The Emmys hosting role rotates among the four broadcast networks, despite nominations becoming rarer in the streaming era. Hargitay is a rare non-comedian to get the job, last held by Nate Bargatze on CBS.
While NBC isn't expected to see many key nominations, Saturday Night Live always secures its share. Pluribus from Apple TV+ and HBO Max's The Pitt, starring former NBC star Noah Wyle, are anticipated leading nominees, to be announced by Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller.
