Marcus Rashford names two Manchester United legends as footballing idols

Marcus Rashford has named Manchester United legends Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo as his two idols growing up.

The current United forward said he idolised the two spearheads of Sir Alex Ferguson's successful side in the late 2000s, with Rooney and Ronaldo guiding the Reds to three successive titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009 — and the Champions League in 2008.

Rashford emerged through the United academy to play alongside Rooney towards the end of the latter's career, with Rashford making his debut in 2016.

And during a question and answer session with followers on Twitter, Rashford was asked who his idol was. To one question he responded simply by saying: "Football idol, Wayne Rooney."

And to another that asked who his role models were growing up, Rashford said: "It was Cristiano and Rooney but then my mum." He had previously said Ronaldo and Rooney were his 'favourite' footballers of all time.

Rashford was also asked to name a player he would have loved to play with, if there'd be the opportunity. He spoke about Ryan Giggs' experience of playing alongside Eric Cantona.

He said: "You know what I spoke to Giggsy about playing with Cantona and the way he spoke about it, I'd love to experience being on the pitch with him."
