A boyhood Sunderland fan, the playmaker would top a number of Sunderland fans' wishlists as they look to build their squad for the upcoming season where they hope, at the third time of asking, to earn promotion from League One.

But with new salary caps coming into League One this summer, limiting Sunderland to an annual wage budget of £2.5m, a deal for the 26-year-old looks increasingly unlikely.

And Maddison has confirmed that he's received no contact from the Black Cats this summer.

Responding to a supporter on Instagram who asked him to join the club, he wrote on his Story: "To all Sunderland fans, I love the comments, really do appreciate them, but I've had no contact from SAFC, or any other club for that matter.

"Most unwanted man in football."

Maddison was back in action at the weekend as he turned out for non-league club Peterborough Sports to keep up his fitness levels as he continues his search for a new club.
