Marcos Rojo opens up on failed Everton transfer - and whether he'll leave Manchester United in January

Marcos Rojo has lifted the lid on his failed move to Everton on transfer deadline day following the close of the European transfer window.

The Argentina international is out of favour at Manchester United, having made just six appearances last season, and had looked set to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

Marco Silva was keen on landing the 29-year-old on loan only for United to insist on a permanent deal, ensuring a deal didn't materialise last month before the start of the Premier League season.

Speaking about the failed move last month, the Blues boss told the ECHO: “It didn't happen because, the clubs, they didn't agree.

“I don't like to go deeper into the deal and the business side of things. On the last day, he was one of the targets because the market is not so big at that moment and you don't have big, big time to do it also.

"At the end, and what I know through the feedback given to me, was that the clubs didn't agree. This is what I know. The player looks like he wants to come. I can't 100% he wanted to come but he looks like he wants to come but at the end the clubs didn't agree.”

With Rojo still at Old Trafford following the close of the European transfer window, the defender will now have to wait until January for a potential move.

Despite his lack of game-time, he was recently recalled by Argentina after missing out on a place in their squad for the Copa America.

But, having made just one matchday squad appearance for the Red Devils so far this season, the defender has revealed he still has his eyes on a Manchester United exit as he opened up on his failed move to Goodison Park when speaking to reporters on international duty.

“I talked to (Lionel) Scaloni, he told me that he was happy because in the pre-season I had played many games, that I looked good and that’s why he called me, but that I had to play,” Rojo said (via  Olé and Sport Witness ).

“I’m sure that to play in the national team you have to play in your club, you have to always be there, and when you’re here, show why.

“It’s difficult to leave when you are in such a big club. I had the possibility of Everton, but by decisions of the club or the manager it wasn’t possible.

“I have been fine for two years that I did not do the pre-season with the team, I feel very well physically. The most important thing for me is that, it is the coach's decision to play or not.

“Now I have to fight until December and if it doesn’t work out, I will try to leave.

“The qualifiers and the Copa America are coming and I want to be part of that. I don’t want to be out again, I want to exhaust all the possibilities and compete to be here.”
