Marco Rose set for Celtic rematch as RB Leipzig close in on Domenico Tedesco replacement

RB Leipzig are set to make a quickfire appointment after sacking Domenico Tedesco.

Celtic’ s Champions League Group F opponents swing the axe this morning after the Bundesliga outfit were thumped 4-1 at home by Shakhtar Donetsk last night, with Parkhead flop Marian Shved scoring twice to pile the pressure on Tedesco. Ange Postecgolou takes his team to face Shakhtar next week before a crucial double header against Leipzig at the beginning of next month.

And the German club will almost certainly have their new boss in place before then. According to Bild , they are set to offer Rose the job after previously managing two of their domestic rivals. Rose left Borussia Dortmund in the summer after being knocked out of the Europa League by Rangers on their run to the final in Seville last season. And he’s set for a return to Glasgow in charge of Leipzig with an agreement reportedly close and could be reached as soon as later on today.

Rose has some history with the green side of the city as well. Previously part of the Red Bull stable as Salzburg manager between 2017 and 2019, He recorded two wins over the Hoops during the 2018/19 Europa League group stages.

The Austrians were 3-1 victors at home before beating the Scottish champions 3-1 at Celtic Park two months later. That resulted in them top the group and Rose celebrated after the final whistle by sporting a Celtic hat and scarf.

Speaking ahead of that game, Rose talked up the Celtic Park atmosphere. "I think everyone who comes here tomorrow have earned that right to experience a great game,” he said.

"It is a very cool stadium, you can feel the atmosphere even without the supporters. Even in the locker rooms you can breathe in the atmosphere.

"The supporters are notorious, amazing. We are happy to be here, but we also want to show that we are rightfully here."

He was also linked with the Parkhead vacancy after Brendan Rodgers quit for Leicester in February 2019. Rose was one of a number of names mentioned in contention after Neil Lennon was placed in interim charge, but the Northern irishman got the gig on a permanent basis for a second time, famously being offered the job by Peter Lawwell in the Hampden showers after a 2-1 Scottish Cup final victory over Hearts that May.
