Map shows all the places lightning hit in and around Bristol last night

Many people in Bristol and surrounding areas saw lighting strike during last night's thunderstorms.

The LightningMaps.org website shows all the places it struck yesterday evening (August 12), as the UK was besieged by stormy weather.

In the west of England, the map indicates strikes started in South Gloucestershire and bypassed Bristol itself, before hitting areas in North Somerset.

There was a smattering of affected spots in South Gloucestershire, including Thornbury, Tytherington, Alveston and Olveston.

Most of these happened between 6pm and 6.30pm.

It was North Somerset which bore the brunt of the strikes, particularly the areas around Bristol Airport in Lulsgate Bottom.

Lightning hit Cleeve, Wrington, Lower Langford and Redhill between 7pm and 10pm.

Some coastal areas of North Somerset, including Clevedon and Portishead, were also affected.

There were strikes in the Chew Valley too, mainly between 7pm and 8pm. Stanton Drew and Stanton Wick were among the areas hit.
