Manuel Pellegrini insists West Ham are not thinking about league position yet after missing chance to go third

Manuel Pellegrini says West Ham are not concerned by their place in the Premier League so early in the season despite missing the chance to go third with a win over Crystal Palace.

A late, VAR awarded, Jordan Ayew goal saw the Hammers lose in the Premier League for the first time since defeat to Manchester City on the opening day.

Having taken the lead in the second half through Sebastien Haller, the hosts looked comfortable until a Declan Rice handball in the box offered Palace a way back in, with Patrick van Aanholt converting from the spot in the absence of Eagles captain Luka Milivojevic.

"No we are not thinking about the position we want to finish," Pellegrini said. "We must try to play in the way we have played so far, get the most amount of points at home, but we did all to win this game.

"People can talk about what they see, I think that we must be very clear about what football is, the Premier League is a difficult league, we lost a good option in this moment to go third but we have a lot more games so we must continue working.

"It’s a tough feeling. Not only to get nothing from the game but also missing the chance to be among the top three positions in the table."

West Ham travel to troubled Everton following the international break and will look to get back on track on the ground where Pellegrini secured his first League win as Hammers manager last season.
