Manikanta emerges fastest

Services athlete misses record but wins gold on debut

BENGALURU: HH Manikanta raced to the gold medal in the men's 100m final at the 62nd National Open Athletics Championships here on Thursday but couldn't improve on the 10.23s he clocked in Wednesday's semifinals to better the national record.

The Inter-Services champion finished way ahead of teammate Nikhil Patil who came second in 10.69s. Railways inter-state meet champion Siva Kumar B was third in 10.7.

"I was hoping to better yesterday's time but I'm happy with my performance," a beaming Manikanta told TOI after receiving the gold medal on debut.

"My next target is the National Games," added the 21-year-old who is aiming to improve his time to meet the Paris Olympics qualification mark of 10 seconds.
