A driver of a car police suspected was stolen fled on foot after ditching the vehicle.
Officers spotted the Vauxhall Astra in Huyton last night.
The driver failed to stop and sped off towards Princess Drive.
Within five minutes the driver had ditched the car and run away.
Officers carried out a search of the area, including nearby Fincham Green. A police dogs unit was brought in but it failed to find the suspect.
Now police are appealing to the public for help to trace the driver.
A Merseyside Police spokesman told the ECHO: "We can confirm that officers were in Huyton last night following a fail to stop incident.
"At around 10.40pm, officers sighted a suspected stolen Vauxhall Astra which failed to stop for patrols and made off at speed towards Princess Drive. The car stopped and a man was seen to make off on foot."
He added: "Following a full search of the area assisted by our dog section, no trace of the man was found and enquiries are ongoing to locate him. He is described as white, bald, and wearing a blue T-shirt."
