Mandy Moore stars as country music pioneer in new podcast

Mandy Moore stars as Sue Brewer in Audible's podcast series.

Mandy Moore is set to captivate audiences as she stars in a new Audible podcast series that delves into the unsung hero of the outlaw country music movement. Titled 'The Boar's Nest: Sue Brewer and the Birth of Outlaw Country Music,' this scripted podcast from Fresh Produce Media for Audible sheds light on the remarkable story of Sue Brewer, a pivotal figure in the Nashville music scene during the 1960s.

Brewer, who sadly passed away in 1981, played a crucial role in launching the careers of iconic artists such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Shel Silverstein, and Kris Kristofferson. Her home, affectionately named 'The Boar's Nest,' became a vibrant hub that nurtured the creative talents of these artists, shaping the sound and soul of country music as we know it today.

Set to premiere on March 14 exclusively on Audible's platform, 'The Boar's Nest: Sue Brewer and the Birth of Outlaw Country Music' consists of eight episodes. Audible subscribers can enjoy the podcast as part of their Audible Plus subscription plan, which is priced at $7.95 per month.

Mandy Moore, known for her roles as a singer, songwriter, producer, and actor (notably in the hit TV series 'This Is Us'), takes on the lead role of Sue Brewer. In a statement provided to Variety, Moore expressed her excitement in bringing this story to life in audio format. She said, 'The beauty of telling this story in audio is that listeners will find themselves completely immersed in the heart of the Nashville music scene at such an exciting time in its history. Sue Brewer's pioneering legacy is one that is often overlooked despite her resounding impact on outlaw country and some of its most celebrated artists. I'm honored to pay homage to her and the music revolution she helped ignite from her living room.'

'The Boar's Nest' was a collaborative effort between Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman's Jagged Films, Bill Gerber (known for producing 'A Star Is Born'), Oso Studios, Fresh Produce, and Audible. Mick Jagger, expressing his delight at the completion of the podcast, said, 'Set amongst now-legendary country artists in Nashville, Sue created a haven for the emerging talent of that time.'

The talented cast of 'The Boar's Nest' includes Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Shel Silverstein, W. Earl Brown as Waylon Jennings, Stephen Louis Grush as Willie Nelson, John Hoogenakker as Kris Kristofferson, T.J. Osborne as Johnny Cash, Brad Leland as Faron Young, Maury Morgan as Frances Preston, Quincy Dunn-Baker as Chet Atkins, and Liz Sharpe as Frances Beer. The series masterfully presents Brewer's perspective, taking listeners inside her famous songwriting salons in each episode.

'The Boar's Nest' is not just a narrative experience; it also features new recordings of country classics, including well-known songs by Jennings, Nelson, Kristofferson, Silverstein, the Everly Brothers, and a gospel standard. These familiar tunes further enrich the storytelling and transport listeners back to the transformative era of country music.

Fresh Produce CEO Jason Ross expressed his excitement about the podcast, saying, ''The Boars Nest' captures the heart at the center of a transformative era in country music.' Ross, a former musician himself and a fan of these iconic artists, found the music for the show coming together to be a truly special experience. He shared his admiration for Dub Cornett and producer John 'Ferg' Ferguson, who collaborated with renowned artists John Prine and Johnny Cash and were present during the birth of the outlaw country music movement. Ross commended the writing team for successfully honoring Sue Brewer's legacy and for bringing attention to her significant contributions.

Directed by Kimberly Senior, 'The Boar's Nest' was brought to life by the creative talents of producer Dub Cornett, along with Holly Gleason and Rachel Bonds as writers. Elena Bawiec, head of production at Fresh Produce, played a pivotal role in bringing the project to fruition, while Jason Ross and Colin Moore, the chief content officer at Fresh Produce, served as executive producers.

'The Boar's Nest: Sue Brewer and the Birth of Outlaw Country Music' is just one of the compelling titles produced by Fresh Produce for Audible. Their portfolio includes a range of content, from noir dramas to music storytelling series, exploring diverse themes and engaging audiences in unique and immersive experiences.
