‘Mandalorian’ creator Jon Favreau pitches Star Wars ride for Disneyland

SANTA ANA, Calif. — “Mandalorian” series creator Jon Favreau wants Walt Disney Imagineering to build an immersive theme park ride based on the Razor Crest spaceship in the Disney+ show for the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge lands in Disneyland and Disney World.

Favreau pitched the idea for a new Mandalorian ride during a wide-ranging interview with IMDB about the new third season of the popular Star Wars television show.

Favreau would center the attraction on the Razor Crest spacecraft that served as the trusty transport and living quarters for Mandalorian Din Djarin and the Force-sensitive toddler Grogu. The former military craft was destroyed in the second season of “The Mandalorian” by Imperial forces.

“I’d probably do something that’s very immersive,” Favreau told IMDB. “I’d probably do something with haptics worked in. I’d probably use assets that we use in The Volume.”

Haptic technology provides a tactile response — like a vibrating smartphone or rumbling video game controller.

Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic uses StageCraft Volumes to film “The Mandalorian” and other Star Wars shows and movies. The virtual production stages surround actors and physical sets with a nearly 360-degree array of LED screens that can display real-time effects and background scenes.

“Even when you’re just sitting there, it feels like a ride,” Favreau said of The Volume.

Favreau wants the Razor Crest attraction to also explore the secrets of movie-making magic.

“It’d almost be like half behind-the-scenes and half a ride,” Favreau told IMDB. “I know when I was younger, I loved when they pulled the curtain back on the effects of the movies. It really made me probably want to do what I’m doing now.”

Favreau envisions his proposed Galaxy’s Edge attraction as a chance for visitors to live the adventure and ride the movie.

“I think that there should be an educational component, but not educational like a museum reading a plaque,” Favreau told IMDB. “Educational, like, sit in here, feel this and here’s how we did it.”

Clearly the Star Wars executive producer and director has given some thought to a Mandalorian ride — and knows a few people at Lucasfilm and Imagineering who could make it happen. Disney has not commented on the possibility of a Razor Crest attraction in the twin Galaxy’s Edge lands at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
