Manchester United vs Stoke City warm-up friendly at Carrington cancelled

Manchester United players and staff were kept away from their Stoke City counterparts ahead of a hastily cancelled warm-up game between the clubs on Tuesday.

The sides were set to play at Carrington before the match was called off at the last minute.

Stoke players had already begun to arrive at United’s training base when the plans were suddenly abandoned.

No official reason has been given for the cancellation, but it is believed it was to do with an issue on Stoke’s side.

It is understood strict coronavirus protocols were followed by both clubs, with no Stoke players entering areas where United staff or players are based.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is stepping up preparations for the restart of the season, with a game against West Brom being arranged for this week.

United also took part in a training match at Old Trafford over the weekend, with Solskjaer splitting his squad into two teams.

The Norwegian has a fully-fit squad to choose from ahead of the restart, with Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford both recovering from long-term injuries.

United face Tottenham away on June 19 – their first game since beating LASK 5-0 in the Europa League on March 12.

Solskjaer said: “We’ve been looking forward to these games for ages really. It does make it feel like ‘yes, we’re here soon. Everyone knows that we will have to be at our best, have to be focused (against Tottenham).

"We know it’s a big game for everyone. We had Chelsea when we started the league this season so I’m confident that our players can go into the Tottenham game with that mentality of going there to play a very good game of football.”
