Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told by former Manchester United midfielder Sammy McIlroy to drop one of Fred or Scott McTominay against Liverpool and play a more creative midfielder in the middle of the park.
The United manager is expected to select the pair from the start as his side welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford this afternoon (Sunday, 4.30pm kick off).
The duo are Solskjaer’s preferred option at the base of midfield for most games, particularly against top sides like Jurgen Klopp's outfit.
Often selected for their energy and the ability to protect the back four, neither Fred nor McTominay are known for their creativity or their passing ability, which can put extra pressure on forwards to create their own chances.
Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek are often the central midfielders forced to watch on from the sidelines or play elsewhere on the pitch, to accommodate 'McFred' and McIlroy has said he wants to see Solskjaer take a risk and select a more creative midfielder from the start to take the game to Liverpool.
“I personally would look to play a more creative midfielder,” McIlroy told TalkoftheDevils in an exclusive interview.
“We play two holding midfielders no matter who we play, the majority of the time, and I don’t think we should.
"It’s only my opinion, but especially at home, even against Liverpool, we should still look to be creating from midfield.”
