Manchester United suffer double injury scare as Mason Mount and Tom Heaton forced off against PSG

Manchester United have been handed a double injury scare as Mason Mount and Tom Heaton were both forced off against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

Mount started against the European champions in Gothenburg, but lasted less than 20 minutes.

Mount appeared to pick up a foot injury, and was unable to continue.

After discussions with coaches on the touchline, Mount was withdrawn and walked down the tunnel towards the dressing rooms. Tyler Fletcher replaced him.

Mount's time at Man Utd has been heavily hampered by fitness issues, being restricted to just 31 league appearances - many of them as a substitute - during his first two seasons.

The England international had looked to put some of his injury woes behind him with an extended run in the team at the start of last season, but was struck down with a hamstring injury to restrict him to just 12 league starts.

The 27-year-old has missed around 400 days on the sidelines since joining from Chelsea in 2023.

Mount’s latest woes will be a reminder to manager Michael Carrick that extra cover in midfield if likely required this season.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have been signed for a combined £90million, but Casemiro’s exit and Manuel Ugarte’s injury mean Man Utd have not been able to boost their midfield depth.

Man Utd were 1-0 down to PSG at the time of Mount’s injury, having gone behind in the second minute through an Ibrahim Mbaye goal.

United kick-off their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Hull City on August 22.

Early in the second half, 40-year-old goalkeeper Heaton suffered a right hamstring injury while rushing out to make a clearance and was quickly replaced by Dermot Mee.
