Manchester United squad react to Juan Mata's new contract

Manchester United players have welcomed the news that Juan Mata will remain with the club next season.

The Spanish magician signed a one-year contract extension to stay with the club until 2022, which will take him to eight-and-a-half-years at Old Trafford - the longest serving first-team player behind David De Gea and Phil Jones.

There were suggestions that the former Chelsea man would leave the club this summer after making only six starts in the Premier League last season, but after conversations with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he has opted to renew his contract and will be sticking around.

Members of the first-team squad reacted to the news of Mata 's new deal on Instagram, with the likes of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw showing their joy at the outcome of the talks.

The World Cup and European Championship winner joined the club in January 2014 in a £37million deal and had his most memorable performances playing on the right wing under Louis van Gaal, including a stunning brace at Anfield in a win over Liverpool.

While it's unlikely that Mata will get continual pitch time next season, his experience is invaluable and with such a young squad currently at the club, he is seen as a big character in the dressing room for them to look at and learn from over the next 12 months.
