Manchester United's £33m bill for sacking managers

Manchester United have spent almost £33m sacking managers since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future at Old Trafford has been put in doubt after reports emerged that Ed Woodward has approached Mauricio Pochettino to become United's new manager.

Solskjaer would be the fourth managerial casualty at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Terminating contracts early doesn’t come cheap.

The sackings of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho cost Manchester United a combined total of £32.9m, according to the club’s accounts.

United paid out £4.9m when David Moyes was handed his P45 in 2014, though the accounts don’t specify how much of that went to Moyes himself.

Louis van Gaal’s departure cost the club £8.4m.

The biggest payout though, came after the dismissal of José Mourinho - £19.6m.

Mourinho is no stranger to big payoffs.

His two spells at Chelsea were both brought to an end prematurely, and cost the club £23.0m the first time, and £8.3m the second time.

In fact, Roman Abramovich has spent an astounding £94.6m on dismissing managers, according to the club's accounts.
