Manchester United might be targetting the wrong British manager to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

MEN Sport understands that Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be in charge of the club's game against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this Saturday.

The manager is still under pressure from the higher-ups after an emergency meeting was called on Monday to discuss the Norwegian's fate, but as of now, it seems he has been given the chance to turn things around at United.

The MEN also understands that Antonio Conte is interested in the role if it was to become available, but as of yet no contact has been made.

However, ESPN are reporting on Friday morning that Brendan Rodgers has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Solskjaer in the dugout, as he has gained recognition from the United board for his good work with Leicester City.

Plainly, I think this would be a bad idea. Rodgers has a history of failing to finish off the good work he starts, he did it with Liverpool in 2013/14 for the title and he did it with Leicester last season when they dropped out of the top four despite looking nailed on for a Champions League position.

The fact that he managed Liverpool within the last 10 years should be enough to convince the United board that this wouldn't be a good idea, however, I mainly don't want Rodgers because if we're going to go down the road of appointing a British manager, he's not even the best choice.

Since he joined Brighton & Hove Albion in 2019, manager Graham Potter has improved the side season on season, playing a clear style of attacking football and he seems to be getting the most out of what is a limited standard of players.

It stands to reason that he would be doing much better if his strikers weren't constantly underperforming their expected goals. Last season due to Brighton's constant chance creation, striker Neal Maupay had an xG of nearly 14 goals and he only scored eight in the Premier League from 2.53 shots a game on average.

This hindrance caused by the lack of a consistent finisher has plagued Potter throughout his tenure, however, at United, he would have access to some of the best finishers in Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

Greenwood would especially thrive under Potter, as he has shown in the past that he overperforms his xG due to his fantastic shooting ability and would be a great option upfront in the long term.

Potter would also play 3-at-the-back, making use of players like Alex Telles and Victor Lindelof in starting XI roles rather than as rotation, they would be vital in the way that Potter likes to play out from the back.

He is also a culture manager, he does a lot of work behind the scenes to build team feeling, there are many reports of his time at Ostersunds where he made the team partake in activities together such as contemporary dancing, singing, and even in some cases rapping.

That may seem stupid and not in line with some expectations of what a football team should be doing, but it's all about building trust and good feeling between the players (and if we got a rendition of Lose Yourself by Ronaldo I'm sure the social team at United would love it).

I'm not saying Potter is the best option by any means, and there is always the risk that he wouldn't be able to make the step up from Brighton and would need a team in the middle, but at the rate, his stock is rising his next team may put him out of contention for the United job.

All I'm saying is if the board is insistent at looking at a British manager within the Premier League, Potter would be the best option and a lot better than Brendan Rodgers.
