Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes title admission after Everton draw

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted his side "shouldn't even be considered" as Premier League title contenders.

United dropped valuable points in the dying seconds of their 3-3 draw with Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin snatching a point for the visitors with virtually the last kick of the game.

It leaves Manchester United two points behind league leaders Manchester City, who have two games in hand ahead of their clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Having dropped points against Liverpool, Arsenal, Sheffield United and now Everton in recent weeks, questions have been asked about United's title credentials, with City hitting top gear after putting together a run of 13 Premier League matches unbeaten.

Solskjaer, though, poured cold water on his side's chances, claiming they shouldn't even be in the conversation.

Solskjaer said: "We're not talking about winning titles. We've come a long way this team. We shouldn't even be considered as title-chasers. That's one for you [the media] - we've got to be better as a team and let's see where we end up. Going forward, we need to stop conceding easy goals.

"They had three shots that hit between the goals and they scored three goals. It's disappointing. And when it's in the last minute of added time it's very disappointing.

"I wouldn't blame anyone on the goals but we know we can defend better."

After the draw, Gary Neville admitted that United's results are starting to dip, as he predicted they would.

“If you look at the period that they’re in now, it’s definitely turned a little bit - they’ve drawn against Arsenal and Liverpool, they’ve lost against Sheffield United, they’ve drawn tonight, so the results are starting to swing a little bit the other way," he said.

"I thought over the period of the last few months that the performances haven’t been fantastic and at some point, the results would catch up with them and this would start to happen.

"But actually tonight, the surprise for me was that they played well. If you make mistakes like that in any game of football, and if the lights go off as well, you’re not going to be able to see me which is actually a real benefit for the viewers at home.”
