Manchester United handed James Maddison transfer update by Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has insisted Leicester have no plans to sell any of their players during the January transfer window.

James Maddison is a priority target for Manchester United but their chances of snaring him mid-season are slim, with the Foxes flying high in the Premier League table.

The England international has directly contributed to six goals in 11 top-flight appearances and Leicester are the closest team to leaders Liverpool in the table.

With Champions League qualification well and truly in their sights, Rodgers has no plans to weaken Leicester's squad.

“We want to grow, and there’s a lot of development left in this squad," Rodgers said. "We’ve absolutely no plans to lose anyone in January.

"Our job is to keep what we have and if there’s an opportunity to improve the squad we will look to do that. If not, we will carry on with the squad we have, which is very strong.”

On Maddison's form this season and his chances at international level, Rodgers added: "If you look at his numbers this season, in terms of the goals he has scored and created, he has shown he is a big-game player.

"He has scored goals against Liverpool, against Tottenham, against Arsenal. James is among a lot of very good players with England and it’s just about preference, whether Gareth [Southgate] and his staff want to pick him.

"You can see he is at the level. If not, he will continue to work. He doesn’t expect to play, he’s not entitled, but he loves playing and will hopefully get many more caps for his country.”

As reported by the MEN this week, Maddison is set to consider a new contract to stay at the club but could wait until the end of the season before deciding on his future amid United's interest.
