Manchester United give Harry Maguire injury update ahead of Europa League final

Harry Maguire is not expected to play for Manchester United again in the Premier League this season due to an ankle ligament injury.

Maguire was injured in United's 3-1 win at Aston Villa on Sunday and arrived for the 2-1 defeat to Leicester at Old Trafford on crutches and with his left foot encased in a protective boot.

United host Liverpool on Thursday night and Fulham next Tuesday before their domestic campaign ends at Wolves on May 23. They face Villarreal in the Europa League final three days later and Maguire faces a nervous wait to see if he is fit enough for selection.

If Maguire is deemed available to play, he will have gone 16 days without playing and the Europa League final is held a day after Gareth Southgate announces his 26-man England squad for the European Championship.

"The good news is it wasn’t broken," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said of Maguire's injury. "There was no fracture, but a ligament injury is serious.

"If I'm very positive that is maybe stretching it, I'm hopeful he might be ready for it. I don’t think he’ll play in the league again but we'll do everything we can to get him ready for the final.

"You always try to look after players long-term, if he’s fit he’ll play for us, if he's not he won’t. We're hopeful he's ready and if he’s ready for us he’ll be ready for the Euros. Norway's not in the Euros, I’m not really that concerned."

Solskjaer made 10 changes for the Leicester loss - the second of United's three Premier League games in five days - and could make a similar number for the visit of Liverpool on Thursday.

Dean Henderson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay, Fred, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, and Edinson Cavani are poised to return. Mason Greenwood could drop down to the bench as he has started in the last three games and Eric Bailly could be the only player to retain his place.

"There’ll be changes, of course," Solskjaer added. "But many of the players that played tonight did really well, so they're in contention as well.

"It's about managing the squad now, building momentum and confidence, making sure we get enough points to get second and then going into the final confident."
