Manchester United fans make Edwin van der Sar clear demand after Ajax decision

Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has resigned from his role as Ajax chief executive, prompting Reds fans to urge him to return to Old Trafford.

The 52-year-old spent more than a decade behind the scenes at the Dutch club where he made his professional debut. He played more than 300 times for the Amsterdam side, before moving to Juventus and Fulham.

He joined United in the summer of 2005 and became the club's first choice goalkeeper for the next six years. The Dutchman filled the void which had been left by Peter Schmeichel's departure and won the Premier League four times and the Champions League once.

After retiring in 2011, Van der Sar headed back to Ajax, joining the club's board in 2012 and taking up his current role in 2016. However, he has now decided to resign from his position at the Amsterdam Arena.

He said: "We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.

"I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things. It doesn't feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign."

It remains to be seen what the next path in the retired goalkeeper's career will be. But reacting to the news on Twitter, a number of United fans clearly want to see Van der Sar make a return to Old Trafford and work once again with Erik ten Hag, who moved to the red side of Manchester from Ajax last summer.
