Manchester United will face competition from Chelsea to sign Raphael Varane this summer.
That is according to Bild who report Thomas Tuchel has asked Chelsea's officials to make an enquiry with Real Madrid about a transfer, with the German looking to bolster his centre-back options at Stamford Bridge.
United are big admirers of Varane and have been for several years, and while Madrid might have previously demanded a substantial transfer fee to sanction a move, the Spanish giants might now be keen to cash in.
The World Cup winner's current deal at Madrid expires at the end of next season and reports have suggested he could be available for as little as £50million, with chiefs at the Bernabeu wary of losing Varane on a free transfer if they don't sell him this summer.
Meanwhile, Spanish outlet Sport is reporting that discussions over a new deal for Ousane Dembele at Barcelona have stalled.
Similarly to Varane, Dembele's contract expires at the end of the next season meaning he could leave on a free transfer.
United considered Dembele as an emergency loan option on the right wing last summer but ended up signing Amad and Facundo Pellistri on deadline day.
