Manchester United defender Raphael Varane dismisses Harry Maguire and Sergio Ramos comparison

Raphael Varane says he needs much more time working with Harry Maguire before they can be fairly judged as a partnership for Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer identified adding a new centre-back to his side as a priority in the summer transfer window as he looked to strengthen his back line for the new season.

Varane was quickly circled as the dream addition in the defensive role and was convinced to sign a four-year contract with the option of an additional year for a fee rising to £43million.

United kept a clean sheet when Varane made his debut away at Wolves last month but the side leaked goals in their subsequent matches against Newcastle and Young Boys.

The French defender formed a formidable partnership with Sergio Ramos during his time at Real Madrid but he reiterated it will take time before he and Maguire have a similar understanding at Old Trafford.

"With Sergio Ramos, I had 10 years to get to know him, to get to know how he moves on the pitch and how I have to move to be complementary with him," he told Sky Sports.

"I think Harry Maguire is a great player but we have to work hard to feel comfortable on the pitch. It's the same with every defender in the team. It's important to feel connected. We have to move together and motivate each other.

"Every day, we are learning and improving."
