George Hodgson

Manchester United could net millions from Premier League side's potential signing

One year after Tahith Chong brought his Manchester United chapter to an end, the winger could secure a return to the Premier League stage.

Top flight new boys Luton Town are reportedly chasing his signature, after winning the Championship play-off final against Coventry City. The Hatters are looking to build a squad capable of competing in England's top division - and Luton boss Rob Edwards reportedly views Chong as someone who would boost that cause.

The Curacao-born forward spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Birmingham and then completed a permanent move to the Blues last summer. Having spent last pre-season working under United boss Erik ten Hag, a reported £1.5million deal went through and Chong went on to impress over the course of the campaign for Birmingham.

He scored four goals and made five assists in 41 appearances for the St Andrews outfit, who finished 17th under John Eustace. In the deal which United agreed with Birmingham is a reported 25 per cent release clause - something United could now benefit from this summer, should Luton get the signing over the line.

The 23-year-old made 16 appearances for United's first team in total, after signing from Feyenoord at 16 years of age. Loan spells at Werder Bremen and Club Brugge were had before the Midlands moves and last season, Chong had the pleasure of playing alongside United youngster Hannibal Mejbri at club level.

There were high hopes for Chong at Old Trafford - where he became the first player since Giuseppe Rossi to win the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year the season after claiming the Young Player of the Year award. But, the Netherlands youth international felt the need to drop down to the Championship in order to better his career - a decision which could pay off, perhaps even sooner than Chong hoped.
