Manchester United confirm millions it will pay Glazers in dividends in 2020

Manchester United have confirmed plans to pay out almost $15million (£11.6million) to shareholders by early in the new year, with the vast majority of this sum landing in the pockets of the Glazer family.

According to Manchester United's financial first quarter report released today, the club will pay its usual $0.09 per share dividend to certain shareholders on 2 December 2019 and the remainder on 6 January 2020.

This tallies up to more than $14.8million.

A dividend is money paid to shareholders stemming from the profits of a business, or failing that, its cash reserves.

The $14.8million dividend payment is expected to double as Manchester United typically pay these dividend payments twice throughout the season. The club confirmed the dividend was "semi-annual."

However, confirmation of the second dividend payment later in the season was not revealed by the club.

Last season, the club paid out $29.6million to shareholders in two semi-annual payments.

The club said at the time that it expected to continue paying regular dividends to shareholders, although "the declaration and payment of any future dividends, however, will be at the sole discretion of our board of directors or a committee thereof and will depend upon our results of operations, financial condition" among other factors.

Currently, Manchester United have a little over 164.5million shares issued.

Of these, 124million are Class B shares, all held by the Glazer family and carrying the vast majority of voting power at the club.

A further 40.6million or so Class A shares are publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, split between a range of investors, carrying significantly less voting power.

However, certain of the six Glazer siblings, the children of the late Malcolm Glazer, own millions of these shares also.
