Manchester Airport evacuated after reports of 'suspicious package' found in terminal

Manchester Airport has been evacuated after reports of a suspicious package found in a terminal.

A spokesperson for the airport earlier confirmed Terminal Two was evacuated.

They said flights due to operate in and out of Terminal Two will most likely be diverted to Terminal One as a result of the incident.

The spokesperson said: "Following a report of a suspicious package in Terminal Two, a controlled evacuation is taking place as per standard procedure.

"We are in close contact with Greater Manchester Police, who are managing the response, and will provide an update on the situation as soon as possible."

Police have since said the item was not deemed to be a threat - but the terminal remains closed.

One man has told the Manchester Evening News his sister and her family have been caught up in the evacuation today.

He said they had been moved from one end of Terminal Two to the other.

He described the atmosphere as 'calm' and said his family had been moved to the gate area, away from the shops and duty free.

The drop off area for Terminal Two has also been blocked off, reports say.

One passenger tweeted earlier: "Stuck in Terminal 2 now for over an hour with hundreds of people and no information."

One passenger has said their flight was due to depart around half an hour ago.

They have not been allowed to board and are being kept by the gates along with staff, he said.

Greater Manchester Police have said in an updated statement: "Police were called with a report of a suspicious package in Terminal 2 of Manchester Airport at around 3.20pm today (19 October 2021).

"In line with standard procedure, the terminal was evacuated and a cordon was put in place as a safety precaution while an assessment was carried out.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended the scene and the item was not deemed to be a threat.

"The terminal remains closed and GMP continues to work with Manchester Airport to reopen it as soon as possible.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Assistant Chief Constable Scott Green said: “Thankfully, on examination, the package was assessed and it was confirmed as not being a viable device.

“I would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while we investigated this matter.”
