On-loan Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg suffered a nightmare when his unfortunate own goal kept Preston North End rooted to the bottom of the Championship.
Van den Berg is spending the season at Deepdale having impressed during a temporary stay during the second half of last term.
The 19-year-old, bought as a centre-back by Liverpool in 2019, was playing in a right wing-back role at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday evening.
And his attempt to race back and clear a dangerous home attack 16 minutes from time resulted in him inadvertently smashed the ball into the bottom corner of his own net for the only goal of the game.
“It’s just one wee lapse in concentration and they manage to break through," said Preston boss Frankie McAvoy.
"I feel gutted for Sepp because I felt he did really, really well within the game.
“At the end of the day, Sepp has come over to try to cover it and unfortunately for him, he’s steered the ball into his own net.
"Sometimes, football is cruel. When you’re doing your best, your utmost to try to win points and games, the opposite can happen, and particularly when it’s 0-0, with a bit of quality or a mistake.
“We’re disappointed, disappointed on the whole for the group, they are so bitterly disappointed."
Preston are still without a point in the Championship having their first three games, but have progressed to the League Cup second round where they will travel to Morecambe next Tuesday.
Van den Berg has made four appearances for Liverpool since being signed from Dutch side PEC Zwolle for £1.3million.
