Man who played loud music from his flat caused 'misery' for his neighbours

A man who played loud music through the night at his flat in Weston-super-Mare has been fined hundreds of pounds.

Luke Simmonds, of Stradling Avenue, was issued with a warning letter and noise abatement notice after North Somerset Council received numerous complaints about loud music and shouting coming from the property, sometimes throughout the night.

Officers visited neighbouring properties where complaints had been received and confirmed that the music - including Queen, drum and bass and Robbie Williams - was so loud it was causing severe nuisance.

Mr Simmonds flouted the notice, continuing to play loud music, forcing the council to obtain a warrant and enter the premises to seize any noise-making equipment such as TVs, games consoles and speakers

At a hearing at North Somerset Magistrates Mr Simmonds – who failed to attend - was found guilty of two breaches of the noise abatement notice.

He was fined £880 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £44 and costs of £704.

Magistrates also ordered Mr Simmonds to give up his electrical goods.

North Somerset Council executive member for regulatory services Councillor Mike Bell said the case had caused misery for the neighbours.

Mr Bell said: “Repeatedly playing loud music can have a devastating effect on the quality of day-to-day life.

“We will not allow people to ruin the lives of others with their selfish actions.

“This case sends a strong message and is a warning to others who think it is acceptable to behave in this manner."
