Man who piloted dinghy in English Channel with 95 migrants on board is jailed

• Omar Heidari, an Afghan national, has been jailed for two years for piloting a dinghy carrying 95 migrants across the Channel , endangering the largest number of lives of any pilot sentenced so far.
• Manas Yuk, an 18-year-old Sudanese national, received an 18-month youth detention sentence for piloting an "overcrowded" boat with 81 people, some without life jackets.
• Both men were sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday under a new offence, introduced in January, for endangering others during a sea journey to the UK.
• These convictions bring the total number of individuals jailed under the new endangerment law to 10 in less than two months, with penalties up to five years in prison.
• The court proceedings follow the deaths of four migrants in the Channel on Thursday and the busiest day for crossings this year on Wednesday, when 752 migrants arrived in the UK.
