Man who grabbed woman's crotch and said 'that's mine' is spared jail

A man who grabbed a woman's crotch in a drug-fuelled rampage has been spared a jail sentence.

Ian Martindale, 34, had consumed alcohol and drugs before committing the offence.

He also called the woman a "slag" and a "slut" during the rampage.

Martindale, of Plaza Boulevard, Liverpool, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Friday, July 10, after he previously pleaded guilty to the offence.

Angela Conlan, prosecuting, told the court that Martindale has committed two drink driving offences but no other sexual offences.

In a victim personal statement, the woman said she had been left feeling "broken" and "scared" following the incident.

Martindale, who ordinarily works on an oil rig, has been subject to a community order for drinking offences, however, that conviction predates this offence.

Christopher Murphy, defending, explained that following the incident the 34-year-old cooperated fully with the police investigation and had entered a prompt guilty plea.

When working Martindale is ordinarily offshore for six to eight weeks, and when he returned he would "hit the bottle", Mr Murphy said.

He accepted he had been drinking at the time of the offence.

District Judge Paul Healey sentenced Martindale to a two-year community order and 180 hours of unpaid work as well as up to 20 days of work with probation.

He was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs, a victim surcharge and £600 in compensation to his victim.
