Jadon Sancho started in a heavily-rotated forward line as Manchester United took on Burnley in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deployed his £73million summer signing on the left wing, with Juan Mata on the other flank and Jesse Lingard in the No.10 role behind centre-forward Anthony Martial.
Goalkeeper Tom Heaton - who arrived on a free transfer from Aston Villa in July - was handed the gloves, while Harry Maguire started three days after skippering the Red Devils to a 5-1 victory over Leeds United in the Premier League.
Eric Bailly partnered Maguire in central defence, and Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams were given the nod in the full-back roles.
Solskjaer turned to Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic to form his double-pivot in central midfield.
Victor Lindelof and Fred were introduced at half-time, while Paul Pogba, Phil Jones, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood, Dan James, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, James Garner and Hannibal Mejbri came on for the final 30 minutes.
Goalkeeper Matej Kovar was an unused substitute.
Raphael Varane was unveiled as a United player over the weekend but played no part in the friendly against the Clarets. Nonetheless, the Frenchman is expected to be included in the squad to face Southampton on Sunday.
It remains to be seen if Solskjaer will throw Varane into the fray immediately or bench him for the clash at St Mary's.
Lindelof picked up an assist against Leeds and may be hopeful of maintaining his starting role, at least for another game.
But Solskjaer will almost certainly partner Maguire with Varane in the long-term and hailed the latter as a "top player" after the victory over Marcelo Bielsa's side.
Will we see Raphael Varane make his Manchester United debut against Southampton? Comment below.
"I am looking forward to working with him. Top professional," said the Norwegian.
"I have followed his career throughout and you just see the way he conducts himself and the way he lives his life, so all the chats I have had with him, the club has had with him we have got a top human being as well as a top player."
Sancho, meanwhile, came off the bench against Leeds to replace James for the final 15 minutes.
By that stage, the Red Devils had already wrapped up the three points thanks to Fernandes' hat-trick and strikes from Greenwood and Fred.
Solskjaer is confident Sancho's arrival will make United more multi-dimensional in attack while sharing scoring responsibilities with Fernandes.
He said: "Jadon will come in and chip in with goals so I feel confident that the burden is not just on Bruno to score."
