Man Utd sent 'mind blowing' message as Erik ten Hag puts Nottingham Forest on transfer alert

Manchester United fans have not reacted well to the news that the club are prepared to sell former Nottingham Forest loan star James Garner.

The Red Devils value him between £15m and £20m, according to the Manchester Evening News. They also report that both Forest and Tottenham are interested in buying him.

The midfielder impressed while on loan at the City Ground last season, playing a key role in the team's success in the play-offs to return the club to the Premier League. He contributed four goals and eight assists in the Championship.

Garner spent pre-season with the Man United squad so that Erik ten Hag could assess him before deciding whether he would be part of the new manager's plans for the 2022/23 campaign. The Birkenhead native has been an unused substitute in the first two games of the season.

United supporters have, in the main, reacted angrily to this news, particularly after the team's current midfield duo of Scott McTominay and Fred have failed to impress in defeats to Brighton and Brentford. Some are calling for Garner to get his chance to show his worth and not be sold to Forest or another club.

Here is what some United fans were tweeting in reaction to the report:

Craig Thompson: Why sell a kid that’s not been given a chance and persist with Fred/McTominay that have let us down for 3 years on the rip. Mind blowing.

Ben: I honestly don’t get this move at all. Was one of forests better players last year in a successful season and he plays in a position we are struggling! Would understand him leaving if he had an abundance of talent ahead of him!

Elisa: From watching him at forest I could see Garner being a future England player, he would constantly run for the ball always works his socks, recovers the ball well and is brilliant on set pieces and can play a beautiful passes. He is everything Utd need, don't understand this.

Samim Middey: This is criminal to keep Fred and McTominay but sell a talented young player who can actually play and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. The worst part is he has not even been given a chance.

Elliot: Amazing that a player we know we don’t want is occupying the bench, whilst the worst CM’s the club has seen in the last 50 years are getting first 11 treatment week in week out. There’s no way Garner is worse than McTom or Fred. He can’t be.

Francis: Bloody disgrace. And keeping McToilet and Fraud as our only options.

Bewsh: Need a buy-back clause in this. It’s sad, because he deserves a chance, but the board have likely taken up this decision due to the transfers team being pathetic at selling less desirable players and Joel Glazer picking who we’re allowed to sell.

Manav: What @ManUtd are smokin!! They didn't give Garner a chance to showcase his talent... if he goes it'll be a major loss for United.

Zig: United briefing that they are not selling ronaldo but would let james garner go is a nice one-two punch to start the week

Hobbs: What a waste of a talented midfielder... compared to the shambles we already have in there, he was never given a chance

Regs: How we are not giving him the time of day in the starting 11 is beyond me, one of our best midfielders we have.

Andrew: Remember when United would use their youth players to build foundations for their squads?

Kuioha: This club is a joke.

Grim: If he was at another club United would be trying to buy him at that price is all I’m saying.

Tom: Surely it’s worth giving this guy a chance as you know McTominay has reached his ceiling.
