Man Utd's six Argentina stars and Sir Alex Ferguson's furious "f****** idiots" blast

When Lisandro Martinez steps out onto the Old Trafford pitch next season draped in Manchester United colours, he will join a seven-man list of Argentines to play for the club.

It is fair to say that United's history with the South American country has been somewhat chequered - with millions of pounds spent, loyalties crossed and some unsavoury comments made. After agreeing a £43million fee with Ajax, there are high hopes that Martinez could become the best of the lot.

At the bottom end of the Argentine stars to have played for United, it is a shootout between Angel di Maria and Juan Sebastian Veron. There are some startling similarities, both joined for British transfer records at the time, had brilliant seasons beforehand, huge reputations and both fell out of love with Manchester very rapidly.

Di Maria joined from Real Madrid but lasted just one season after scoring just three Premier League goals - disappearing to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer. Veron, on the other hand, lasted a bit longer - one year to be precise - but while he made little impression, Sir Alex Ferguson once defended him like he was his own son.

"He [Veron] is a f***ing great player" he barked at journalists once before telling them to get out. "And you're all f***ing idiots."

Di Maria might consider himself somewhat unlucky he did not have a Fergie in his corner when the knives were out. But one player who might not have the old United manager on his Christmas card list is Carlos Tevez.

While the former striker was regarded as a cult hero at the time, forming a deadly striker partnership with Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov, his move to Manchester City might have spoiled his good relationship with the fans. If that did not, his sign portraying "RIP Fergie" might have been the final nail in the coffin.

On the topic of cult heroes, another that might fall under that category is Marcos Rojo, who might not have been the best defender to play at United, but certainly was among those to wear his heart on his sleeve. The centre-back never truly asserted himself in the first-team, making a maximum of 22 appearances in the Premier League in one season.

Despite his reputation, the current Boca Juniors star never received a red card in the Premier League - though he did love a chopping challenge. One of his inspirations, no doubt, would have been a defender that had a better time at Old Trafford than him - Gabriel Heinze.

One of the few Argentines that might be considered a success at United, Heinze's time at the club was short but sweet - spending three seasons where he played at left-back and centre-back under Ferguson. United fans loved him - though his second season was spent on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The final Argentine to play for the Red Devils might have been forgotten to some in the form of Sergio Romero, who played back-up to David de Gea. In six years at Old Trafford, the goalkeeper played an incredible seven times in the Premier League while for his country, he would go on to make 96 caps.

Erik ten Hag has a clear plan for Martinez next season while he landed Ajax's player of the year award last year. And while it is suffice to say that there has hardly been much success from Argentina at United over the years, the defender does not have much to do to become a bigger hit than those before.
