Manchester United had serious doubts over extending Edinson Cavani's contract for another season even before it emerged the striker is unhappy at the club, according to reports.
Cavani's father, Luis, claimed earlier this week that his son is fed up of life in England and wants to be nearer his family in South America.
The Uruguayan is believed to be closing in on a move to Argentine giants Boca Juniors after rejecting the option to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
Cavani joined United on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, signing a one-year deal with the option for another season.

Both parties must agree to the extension being activated and the latest revelations about Cavani's feelings mean he is unlikely to give his consent.
While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted he wants Cavani to stay, the Manchester Evening News claims Old Trafford chiefs already harboured serious concerns about the 34-year-old prior to his father's comments.
The report claims club staff are frustrated with Cavani's recent absences, given he was passed fit by the medical team to play in some games.

The striker has missed six of the Red Devils' last seven games, featuring only in the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace last week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Cavani "didn't feel right" during a subsequent training session and he missed the derby clash with Manchester City and the Europa League tie with AC Milan.
His latest knock has coincided with a number of injuries which have left United light of options in attack.
Marcus Rashford has been sidelined with an ankle injury and, like Cavani, is facing an uphill battle to be involved in Sunday's Premier League encounter with West Ham.
Meanwhile, Anthony Martial suffered a hip complaint during the 1-1 draw with Milan and was sent for a scan on Friday.
