Man Utd 'offer' Paul Pogba salary increase in bid to persuade him against free transfer exit

Manchester United have reportedly offered Paul Pogba a new contract worth a total of £500,000 per week in a bid to stop him leaving on a free transfer in the summer.

Pogba is out of contract with United on July 1 and his future has been the subject of intense speculation this season.

Having entered the final six months of his contract, the 28-year-old midfielder is currently able to speak to other clubs about a summer move.

He has been linked with former club Juventus, as well as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

According to The Sun, United are now ready to offer him a new contract worth £400,000 per week before add-ons to tempt him to commit his future to the club.

United are reportedly confident that the offer is around £100,000 more than Pogba could get across Europe, should he choose to leave on a free transfer in July.

The report states that Pogba is yet to decide on whether he will put pen to paper on the fresh terms, which would make him the highest paid player in Premier League history.

Pogba is currently on the sidelines with a thigh injury picked up while away on international duty with France in November.

United interim manager Ralf Rangnick said in December that he would not try to influence Pogba’s decision because he only wants to work with committed players.

"I wouldn't say he is not worth keeping but players need to want to stay and play for the club," said Rangnick.

"If a player doesn't want to play for a club like Manchester United, even in the long term, I don't think it makes sense to convince him to change his mind.

"This is such a massive club, with fantastic support, I don't think anyone at the club should try to convince a player to stay."

The Sun says that while United are hoping to keep Pogba, they are also considering the options to replace him, should he leave in the summer.

West Ham star Declan Rice is reportedly their first choice in central midfield, while Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves could be signed for £35million this month.

Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, has not been shy in discussing his client’s future over the past few months.

"Pogba's contract expires next year. We will talk to United and see," Raiola said in September.

"For sure Turin has remained in his heart and he cares a lot about these things. The possibility of returning to Juventus is there but it also depends on Juve."

Pogba rejoined United from Juventus in August 2016 for what was then a world transfer record fee of £89m.

The France international, who is currently on a £290,000-a-week salary, has contributed 49 assists and 38 goals in 219 appearances for United.
