Man Utd fans react as David De Gea extends unwanted record

There's not much doubt that David De Gea is one of the world's best keepers, but fans have picked up on something which could be preventing him taking the number one spot.

The Manchester United goalkeeper has a record attached to his name that no goalkeeper would want.

De Gea doesn't have too many faults, even though he is going through one of his more tricky Premier League campaigns to date.

He is yet to sign a new contract at Old Trafford - despite a massive offer being on the table for well over a year.

But during his career, De Gea has saved just 11 of the 50 penalties he has faced.

That may not seem too bad, but in the last three years he hasn't kept a single one out - that's 16 straight spot kicks he's let in.

Things are no better when he turns out for his country.

He played in Spain's 2-1 win over Norway as they opened their Euro 2020 qualification campaign with a win on Saturday.

But there was no clean sheet as Joshua King, the Bournemouth player, got it right from 12 yards.

His last penalty save was from his now team-mate Romelu Lukaku back in 2016 and fans have been quickly to remind him of that.

United remain locked in talks with De Gea's representatives over a contract extension.

The Spaniard’s current deal expires at the end of next season but Old Trafford chiefs are keen on tying him down to a new long-term deal.

United are willing to pay De Gea £350,000-a-week, almost double his current £200,000-a-week salary, in order to keep him in the Premier League.

However the 28-year-old's representatives want closer to £500,000-a-week, which has proved a stumbling block to an extension being agreed.

Real Madrid are closely monitoring the situation with their signing from Chelsea Thibaut Courtois struggling for form.
