Man Utd confirm huge Europa League final blow as duo ruled out with injuries

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has effectively ruled out Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire from playing in next week's Europa League final.

Maguire suffered ankle ligament damage in United's 3-1 win at Aston Villa a fortnight ago and is struggling to recover in time.

Solskajer confirmed United striker Anthony Martial, out since March 28 with a knee injury, will definitely miss the final against Villarreal in Gdansk next Wednesday.

On Maguire, Solskjaer said: “He's walking but it's a long way from walking to running.

“To be honest, I don't think we'll see him Gdansk, no, but I'm going to give him until Tuesday night, the last training session, to be out there.

“Steadily but surely he's improving, but ligaments take time to heal.

“Anthony's not going to be available, but Scott [McTominay] and Fred should be okay.”

Even if Maguire cannot play, Solskajer said the defender will ave a crucial role to play in the dressing-room and fro the sidelines in Gdansk.

“Harry's a very important person in the dressing-room and a leader,” said the United boss. “Before the fans came back in, you could hear him from the stands.

“He wants the team to do well, he's organising from the stands, and it's easy to hear him because it's been so quiet. He'll make sure everyone's ready for the final.”
