Man Utd captain Harry Maguire should be "embarrassed", says Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand has claimed Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire will be embarrassed looking back at the incident that almost resulted in a penalty during their draw with West Brom.

Maguire was left fuming with referee Craig Pawson, as he felt the game's two big decisions went against his team, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns.

The United central defender was annoyed with the decision to allow Albion's opening goal, believing Victor Lindelof was fouled by goalscorer Mbaye Diagne.

But that was nothing compared to his frustration when he thought he had won a second-half penalty. Maguire went down in the area, after appearing to be pulled back by Semi Ajayi.

Pawson initially pointed to the spot, only to overrule his original decision after consultation with VAR officials advised him to re-check the incident on a pitchside monitor.

“I was so certain it was a penalty,” he explained. “I don’t understand why he’s been sent to the monitor to even check it.

“I’m goal side of the defender, I feel a touch on my shoulder, he’s pulling me back and then I feel actually a little clip on my heels as well.

“It was minimal but it’s a penalty, especially after the referee points to the penalty spot you think there’s no chance it’s getting overturned.

“I was so confident that it was going to be given as a penalty but it seems like the decisions at the moment are going against us.”

However, United legend Ferdinand felt Maguire was too quick to go down and predicted he would be ashamed looking back at it.

“If Harry’s being honest, he will have woke up the next morning and been embarrassed with what he did," he said, on his Vibe with FIVE YouTube show.

“It’s not what you want to see from a defender. I don’t think that’s what he’s prided himself on throughout his career.

“You try and be cute, I understand that, but you would be embarrassed really. He will watch it back and go, ‘bloody hell, what was I thinking?’”
