Man Utd board ‘blocked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer plans’ in summer window

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans to trim down his Manchester United squad have been blocked by the Old Trafford board.

Solskjaer had hoped to offload a number of expensive fringe players, who do not feature in his first team plans this season.

While Alexis Sanchez is close to securing a loan move to Inter Milan, Solskjaer is facing having to keep players with no future.

United's board have blocked the departures of Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian, who are both well down the Old Trafford pecking order.

The Standard reports the Glazers pulled the plug on a loan deal to take Rojo to Everton and instead demanded £25m for the Argentine.

United are also after £12m for Darmian, who had attracted interest from his native Italy.

The pair's wages are also proving to be a problem with Solskjaer now left with an imbalanced squad, with the Norwegian vowing to shake things up at the end of last season.

But he has been left with as many as seven central defenders and three right backs in his senior squad.

United had also hoped to add a central midfielder this summer with Sean Longstaff and Bruno Fernandes among those linked.

But the failure to add a new face means Solskjaer is reluctant to do a deal for Brazilian midfielder Fred, who has also not featured at all this season.

The case remains the same for Nemanja Matic and the impending departure of Sanchez is set to leave United desperately short of cover in attack.

Mason Greenwood has impressed Solskjaer but the 17-year-old faces shouldering the attacking burden, if Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial picks up an injury.
