Man Utd and Wales star Dan James breaks himself training in Mykonos heat days after team-mate Harry Maguire's arrest

Manchester United and Wales star Dan James has put himself through a gruelling pre-season training getaway in Greece as he prepares to hit the ground running next term.

The Welsh flyer had a superb start to life at Old Trafford last season, impressing after his £15million move from Swansea City, but tapered off a little towards the end of the campaign.

As such, he came in for what many believe to be undue and harsh criticism, given the leap he made and the sheer volume of games, which he certainly wouldn't have expected, that he played.

But he is ensuring no stone is left unturned ahead of the new campaign and jetted out to Mykonos to finely tune his fitness as he prepares for an important second season up in Manchester.

Mykonos has, of course, hit the headlines in recent days after James' United team-mate Harry Maguire was arrested for his alleged involvement in a bar brawl last week.

While there is a furore understandably surrounding the England international and Red Devils skipper, James appears keen to keep his head down in a bid to raise the bar next term.

Under the 30-degree Mykonos sun, James was put through his paces in a series of sprints, fitness and dribbling skills, as well as a number of speed and agility sessions.

The Wales ace, who is expected to be named in Ryan Giggs' squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Finland and Bulgaria, has fallen behind Mason Greenwood in the pecking order on that right wing and will doubtless be hungry to wrestle back the shirt.

United's perceived lack of depth in that area has prompted arguably the biggest transfer story of the summer – the pursuit of Borussia Dortmund's £108m star Jadon Sancho.

It is believed United and Dortmund are still some way apart in their valuation of the player, though, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be turning his attentions elsewhere.

Wales duo Rabbi Matondo and David Brooks have both been linked heavily with a move to Old Trafford, should United's attempt to sign Sancho fail, while the likes of Juventus wingers Douglas Costa and Federico Bernardeschi have also been mentioned.

It could feasibly transpire, however, that United do not sign anyone to bolster that right-wing position and if that indeed is the case, James wants to ensure he can kick on from the foundations he has built and allay any doubt in Solskjaer's mind.
