Man thought to have jumped from moving van on A470 at Taffs Well in critical condition

A man is in a critical condition after reportedly jumping out of a moving white van on the southbound carriageway of the A470 at Taffs Well.

There were lengthy delays in the area on Tuesday afternoon in what was initially reported by traffic monitors to have been a multi-vehicle crash. But police have now issued an appeal for witnesses to two incidents which are believed to have culminated in a man leaving a moving van on the dual carriageway.

A South Wales Police spokesman said at approximately 3.40pm on Tuesday the force received a report for the concern of a man on a bridge at the Fiddlers Elbow roundabout, Abercynon. Before officers arrived the man had left the area in a white van.

At 3.55pm "calls were received of a man having alighted from a moving white van on the southbound carriageway of the A470 at Taffs Well," the spokesman continued.

"The man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales , Cardiff, with serious injuries where his condition is described as critical."

The southbound carriageway was closed for a number of hours but reopened at around 7.20pm. The northbound side was also closed from Coryton to Taffs Well in order for a helicopter to land but that carriageway was then reopened. The incident happened near Taffs Well, just to the north of Cardiff .

The police spokesman said: "Officers wish to thank members of the public who assisted at scene for their assistance. They would also like to thank the public for their patience during the road closures.

"Anyone who may have witnessed either incident, the manner of driving of the vehicle, or has dashcam footage should call 101 and quote occurrence number 1900229321."
