Man sparks fury after sharing controversial savoury 'birthday cake'

A man has sparked fury after sharing his controversial savoury 'birthday cake'. He says says his girlfriend made him a ham and potato cake for the big occasion as he doesn't like sweets, reports MyLondon.

The birthday boy took to social media to her unique creation, a multi-layer ‘cake’ made from the savoury vegetable and meat. Posting on Reddit, he attached the image of the cake that his partner had cooked up for the big day.

The man captioned the post: "My girlfriend made me a ham and potato cake for my birthday since I don’t like sweets.”

He then followed up the original post by sharing the method of ‘cooking’. The man said: “For everyone asking, we heated it up for 2 minutes in the microwave before eating it.”

The controversial cake was quick to stir up conversation on social media with people keen to give their thoughts on the creation. Many people were appalled by the birthday surprise, stating it made them 'gag'.

”One person said: “This looks to me like I would gag and throw up after one bite.” Another commented: “I wouldn’t. It is possible to make a delicious sandwich cake with ham. This isn’t it.”

A third said: “This is horrendous. I can't tell if it's seasoned or just dirty. Is it meant to be eaten hot or cold?”

However, many other people appreciated the girlfriend’s efforts to cater to her partner’s taste. One person said: “Yeah this one actually looks like it could be decent, it's just ham and mashed potatoes.”

Another commented: “Bro, she's a keeper!” A third wrote, “My wedding cake was tiered wheels of cheese, so I fully support this."

Meanwhile, a fourth replied, “As a fellow sweet denier, I would actually love this. Mash potato is one of my favourite foods and ham (especially that thick) is great.”

It was not the first time seeing a ‘cake’ like this for others who pointed out that it was similar to a Scandinavian dish, such as a voileipäkakku or smögårstårta.

One person wrote: “I think this is a step towards reinventing voileipäkakku or smögårstårta. Literal translation would be sandwich cake and it is popular in Finland for many larger family gatherings.” A second agreed: “It was very thoughtful of your gf to do this, but you might want to look up Smörgåstårta.”
